I HAVE A DREAM
Farnworth Christian Spiritualist Church was started in 1983 by Mr Lewis Trelour Pepper. In those days it was based in little run down wooden hut in Queen Street, Farnworth. It was rented on Sunday evenings for a Divine Service and on Wednesday evenings soon followed to hold Open Circles. In the early days the church could not guarantee that service could go ahead as sometimes when people turned up for the service they found that another function had already been booked in the room so the church service could not go ahead.
In 1986 it was agreed that different premises should be sought which could be used seven days a week in the way that we wanted to. Premises were found above a hardware shop in at 21/23 Higher Market Street, Farnworth. It was a very run down building and we only had one room and the rent was £20 a week. There were worries that we would not be able to cover the cost but we went ahead anyway. The room was partitioned and divided into a chapel, a hallway, a healing room, a kitchen and a toilet. It was whilst we were here that we were given the name ‘Upsteps Church’.
Whilst we were there we started a Building Fund in order that we could fulfil our dream of having our own premises. For the last couple of years we were at Higher Market Street the presidency passed to Mr Trevor Burke. The rent for the premises steadily increased until it went to £80 a week and we had no security to make sure we could remain there. We worked hard still putting money into our Building Fund so we could have our own church.
In 1995 we took a 3-year lease on a premises above the bus station in King Street, Farnworth and it cost an astronomical amount to run, £22,000 a year. It was when we here that Susan Daubney became president of the church. When the lease was due for renewal the landlords refused to renew and so we ended up in a rented room in Farnworth Town Hall – for nearly five years. Ann Pendlebury took over as president for the first few months here but Susan Daubney soon returned to this position and has held it ever since!!
A few times over the years planning applications had been submitted but without success. In 2003 the present premises were found, planning permission was obtained and a loan to go with what we already had in the Building Fund and our dream became a reality! This is why the song ‘I Have a Dream’ is our church anthem – because we dared to dream and our dream came true. Farnworth Christian Spiritualist Church is our dream in action – it is a place where people come to find dreams of their own: to find that reconnection with God and their loved ones.
